The read
Our editorial read
Four days of camping in a Michigan forest where bass, house, and jam bands share the same woods, and the forest itself is half the reason people come back.
The full editorial
Electric Forest runs for four days at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan, a ranch with a wooded center everyone calls Sherwood Forest. You camp on site. GA passes include the campgrounds; you buy a separate car, tent, or RV pass if you want a vehicle beside you, and there are hotel packages if you refuse to sleep outside. The music spans more than electronic dance: The String Cheese Incident has anchored the bill since 2011, and a 2026 lineup mixed Excision and Kaskade with Eggy, Dogs In A Pile, and Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country. Stages like Ranch Arena and Sherwood Court hold the big sets; Tripolee leans bass; The Observatory, Honeycomb, and The Grand Artique sit inside the trees. Music runs into the early hours and the venue closes one hour after it ends. The honest trade-offs: no campground re-entry without staff approval, weak cell service, $10 showers, long walks, and Michigan weather that has forced evacuations in 2024 and 2026. Around 40,000 to 50,000 people attend. What makes it worth it is after dark, when the Forest turns into art, characters, and hidden rooms, and the crowd treats the woods, not the main stage, as the headliner.
Go if
- Campers who want the festival and the campground to be the same place
- People who like bass, house, and techno next to jam bands on one bill
- Groups willing to plan arrivals and camp together
- First-timers who want a smaller, weirder alternative to a speedway festival
Skip if
- You want a hotel bed and a short walk to every stage
- You need reliable cell service or easy trips back to town
- You hate dust, long walks, and porta-potties
Inside the festival
A temporary city in the woods: bass rattling the fields, bluegrass at sunset, and a forest that turns into a hunt for hidden rooms and characters after dark.
Midwest ravers and Forest veterans in costumes, jam-band lifers, big groups from Chicago and Detroit, and a sizable sober camping contingent.

Worth it for / the catch
Worth it for
- The Forest at night is genuinely different from a field festival: art, characters, and small stages in the trees.
- A lineup that puts jam bands and bass on the same weekend, with The String Cheese Incident still anchoring it.
- Camping is built into the pass, and there are sober, group, and quiet campground options.
- Shuttle network and free water refill stations make the basics easy once you are inside.
The catch
- No campground re-entry without staff approval, so a forgotten item can mean a long day.
- Weak cell service and cashless-only vendors add friction.
- Rain years have meant big puddles and dust years have meant masks; the weather is a real variable.
- Everything is a walk, and the walk from the far campgrounds to Tripolee is long.
